The Nicholson River rises below the Angora Range in the lower reaches of the Victorian Alps within the Great Dividing Range, near the small settlement of Marthavale, west of Ensay. The river flows generally southeast passing through the small town of Nicholson before entering Lake King, one of the main lakes in the extensive Gippsland Lakes system. Within the lake, the Nicholson River forms its confluence with the Mitchell River, which joins with the Tambo River.
You will see the rich fertile Snowy River flood plane where Bruthen is located.
Bruthen features an attractive commercial center, consisting of a number of specialty shops, a general store (built in 1860) and the historic post office (built in 1890). Shady gardens with a rotunda and picnic areas are situated beside the town’s main street.
The Tambo River is located just to the south of town and it makes its journey into the Gippsland Lakes system via Swan Reach, entering Lake King north of the fishing village of Metung.
